Walker River Paiute Tribe Tax Department
The Walker River Paiute Tribe Department of Taxation was established as an exercise of and to exercise tribal governmental sovereignty, to protect the Walker River Paiute Tribe's right to home rule, to protect tribal members within our homeland from intrusion of tax laws from the state, and to raise needed revenues for tribal government services.
The Walker River Paiute Tribe has established the Walker River Paiute Tax Commission by virtue of the inherent authority as a sovereign of the Walker River Paiute Tribe to oversee and manage economic and taxation activities occuring within the boundaries of the Walker River Paiute Reservation, as recognized and confirmed by the Act of June 18, 1934, 48 Stat. 984, and pursuant to the power of the Tribal Council to levy assessments and license fees, to safeguard and promote the general welfare of the Walker River Paiute Tribe, and to preserve and protect property as set forth in Article VI, Sections 1(h), and (j), and (p) of the Walker River Paiute Tribe Constitution.
The Tax Commission membership comprises of five (5) commissioners who are Tribal members residing within the Walker River Reservation. The Tax Commission is empowered to administer the tax laws of the Tribe and, to that end, will execute rules and regulations, both substantive and procedural, and orders implementing its decisions, rulings, and instructions, as may be necessary for the proper and efficient administration of those laws.
