The Victims of Crime Program has been under a State of Nevada VOCA Grant for close to 16 years, it currently has one lead advocate providing direct services to victims of crime within the service area (Walker River Paiute Reservation). The Lead Advocate position is currently occupied by Brooke Meyer. This individual has successfully completed the National victims Assistance Academy and has been providing victim services to victims of crime for the past 6 years.
The advocate is currently providing the following services:
- 24 hour crisis intervention, initiated by Law Enforcement dispatch and direct contacts by the victims and their families.
- Emergency food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and child care services.
- Referrals to other Tribal/State/Federal agencies for further or extended services.
- Accompaniment and transportation to medical forensic exams, to ensure victim sensitivity and to assist with understanding of hospital procedures.
- Arrange and transport for clients follow up counseling when needed.
- Court accompaniment for victim support and assistance with understanding court procedures. Assist with filing protection orders and with the returning of property used as evidence.
- Petition court for restitution from defendants.
- Individual and group counseling, referral for Marriage and Family Counseling.
- Assist with obtaining security for one’s home (i.e. securing lights, doors, and windows) in deemed necessary from an incident of property damage.
All services are provided at no cost to victims of crime within the boundaries of the Walker River Paiute reservation. The VOCA program is a tribally operated program that insures services for all victims of crime whether Native American or Non-Native.
